Backstory emerges: Radioactive ‘dirty bomb’ material stolen south of Texas border, Mexico on high alert

GUADALAJARA, Mex. (INTELLIHUB) Nine states have been placed on high alert by the Mexican government after radioactive material was stolen near the outskirts of Mexico’s largest city.

The material is known as Iridium-192 and can be used to make a dirty bomb.

“The source can be dangerous if it is not handled in safe conditions,” a spokesman said for the Ministry of the Interior. It could cause permanent injuries to anyone who manipulates it or is in contact with it over a short period of time.”

This marks the second time that radioactive material was stolen inside of Mexico. In 2013, a truck containing Cobalt-60 was stolen but later recovered.

Iridium-192 has a half-life of about 73 days.
