A freezer malfunction has destroyed 22,000 years of historical climate records.
The freezer was storing ice cores extracted from the Canadian Arctic that contained ancient pollen, dust and gas bubbles trapped for thousands of years.
But a catastrophic failure in the brand-new £2.4million ($3.1million) cooling system caused 180-metre-long (590ft) cylindrical ice cores to melt, destroying precious evidence of the Earth’s history.
The ice cores had been collected from the Canadian tundra by scientists based in Edmonton, Canada, since the mid-1970s.
